Five Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving

Hard to believe that Thanksgiving is less than two week away! During the holidays it can be a struggle to stay on a healthy diet, but it doesn't have to be. Here are five tips that will help.

Tip #1 - Cook with Natural Ingredients

Select fresh ingredients when preparing food. Avoid canned products or if possible store bought desserts. Use healthy oils such as olive oil or coconut oil. Select natural sweeteners such as stevia or monk fruit instead of white sugar. Cooking from scratch is healthier since there is less additives or preservatives in the food.

Tip #2- Drink water


Drink plenty of water. Drink a full glass 30 minutes before dinner can help with better digestion and absorbance of nutrients.

Tip #3- Eat the Colors of the Rainbow

Eat the colors of the rainbow to get the best nutrients and vitamins. Select Reds, like tomatoes, cranberries, great for the heart. Orange: veggies such as sweet potatoes, great source of fiber, beta-carotene. Green: veggies such as green beans, spinach, good sources of fiber, folate, Blues: blue berry pie, great source of antioxidants & vitamin C. Eat more veggies, protein (turkey) and less starchy foods (biscuits, rolls) and desserts.

Tip #4- Practice Mindful Eating

Practicing mindful eating means taking the time to savor each taste and bite. Chew food well and eat slowly. Focus less on the food and more on the company of friends and family. Listen to your body, don't over eat in one sitting. You can also get more at a later time. Allow your body to digest.

Tip #5- Get Moving

Walking and moving after is a big meal is important for overall health. Take a 10-15min walk after eating, get-up and help clean-up. Moving after eating has many health benefits, such as lowering triglycerides, speeding up digestion, lowering blood sugar levels and burning calories.
